An altar with painted or carved panels that open and close like the wings of a book.
Panourile închise arătau, în zilele obișnuite sau în post, scene sobre; la sărbători, altarul se deschidea și dezvăluia picturi aurite. Altarul de la Biertan, cu 28 de panouri, este unul dintre cele mai mari din Transilvania.
